Puerto Rico Perfect — I Like it, I Love it, I Want Some More of It

If you like Florida and Mexico, then you’re going to love Puerto Rico. It’s got the best of both worlds, and for Canadian visitors, you’ll immediately feel at home on this incredibly culturally diverse, vibrant, and spectacularly beautiful island of stunning landscapes and friendly people.

Puerto Rico has a fascinating history that dates to its ‘discovery’ by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Over the centuries, it was colonized by the Spanish and became an important outpost in the Americas.

We spent our first two nights at the famous El Conquistador Resort. Perched on a cliff overlooking the sparkling Caribbean Sea, it offers breathtaking panoramic views, pristine beaches, and world-class amenities. The exceptional service, luxurious accommodations, and delectable dining options at the resort make for a pleasant stay. Lounge by the pool, indulge in a spa treatment, enjoy the tapas and cocktails at the resort’s bars, or just decompress by sitting in one of the many grand foyers sipping espresso—it truly is a tropical paradise.

To get a real sense of the coastline of Puerto Rico and the magnificence of its beaches and water activities, it is worth booking a Mini Boats Tour with Kayaking Puerto Rico.  The best part is that you can drive your own mini zodiac boat as part of a convoy of five with two or three passengers per boat (each Mini Boat comes with snorkelling gear, snacks, and refreshments). The natural beauty of the Puerto Rican coastline was in full display as we slowly made our way out of the magnificent bioluminescent bay on a sunny hot morning and sped down along the coast of Fajardo. Within 30 minutes, we stopped and jumped into the calm waters to do some guided snorkelling. Next up was an hour-long stop on the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters of Cayo Icacos, a small, uninhabited, and protected island part of the La Cordillera Reef Nature Reserve. A highlight of the day was our ride back as we zipped across the bay, bouncing on and off small waves and cutting in and out and around the wake. Simply exhilarating.

One of Puerto Rico’s hidden gems is Palomino Island, a destination site for guests at the El Conquistador and tourists alike who take a ferry across the bay to spend the day on its pristine beaches with its crystal-clear waters. The beachfront restaurant serves up delicious seafood and other local fare. Spend the afternoon snorkeling and swimming in this surreal and serene paradise.

The diversity of Puerto Rico is not just its people, it’s also the terrain. Within an hour, you can be on a beach, and then before you know it, you’ll find yourself in a mountainous valley, canyon, or rainforest. If you are yearning for a different kind of adventure, embark on a Horseback Riding Tour at Hacienda 8A. The staff are exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable about horses and horseback riding and the local area. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never climbed into the saddle-after a couple of hours here, you’ll be ready for the rodeo. There is nothing better than spending a morning riding through the lush landscapes and rolling hills of the interior canyons of Puerto Rico. If you are looking for natural beauty and the sense of tranquility it provides, this is the place to go.

After our morning ride we headed over to Bacoa Finca + Fogon a hidden gem nestled in Puerto Rico’s countryside. This charming restaurant is immersed in the island’s agricultural traditions and vibrant culinary scene. From farm-fresh ingredients to mouthwatering dishes cooked over an open fire, Bacoa Finca + Fogon offered a unique and authentic experience, and some well-deserved cold beers on a sweltering day. Oh, and the espresso here is to die for.

If you’re an adrenaline junkie seeking an unforgettable experience, you will not soon forget the insanely crazy Zipline Adventure at Toro Verde. Surrounded by lush rainforest, you’ll soar above the treetops, over canyons and a river valley at mach speed (well it seems like mach speed) embracing the exhilaration of flying. With breathtaking views and top-notch safety measures, this ziplining adventure is guaranteed to be one of the most crazy and fun adventures of your life. A must-do activity.

San Juan is Puerto Rico’s hustling and bustling capital. For a true treat, you’ll find comfort and solace at the stylish Don Rafa Boutique Hotel and Residences. This intimate, stylish and oh-so-classy hotel embodies the spirit of the historic city. Elegant design, personalized service, and proximity to the city’s iconic landmarks make this a unique and unforgettable stay.

I can’t think of a better way to learn about the Puerto Rican cuisine and culture in San Juan than by experiencing The Spoon Experience, an all-in-one food, drinks, history and culture tour that lets you experience Old San Juan like a local. It’s an immersive journey into the vibrant world of Puerto Rican cuisine and culture through a carefully curated exploration of the island’s culinary heritage. It begins with a visit to local markets to experience the bustling energy and vibrant colours of fresh produce, spices, and ingredients unique to Puerto Rico. We tasted several dishes and stopped by a couple of extremely cool bars for some beverages along the way. Chocolate martinis at Chocolate Cortés Choco-Bar, a delightful Roneria Blanca sangria-style cocktail at the rooftop bar of the DECANTER Hotel and an exquisite Watermelon mojito at the historic Hotel El Convento, which over the centuries has served as a monastery, a convent, a brothel and now a hotel.

Unique on this tour was the underlying narrative about the significant role the city of San Juan plays in the history of Puerto Rico. Established in 1521, it became a crucial port for Spanish ships and a fortified stronghold against invaders. The historic district, known as Old San Juan, boasts cobbled streets, colourful buildings, and impressive fortifications such as El Morro and San Cristobal. The colonial architecture whispers stories of the past, immersing visitors in a bygone era. Strolling along the ancient city walls, you can imagine the echoes of conquistadors and the melodies of Puerto Rican music that once filled the air. The melodies heard today are just as pleasant and magnificent.

You’ll come away with valuable insights into the flavors, traditions, and stories behind Puerto Rican gastronomy…and cocktails! By the end of The Spoon Experience, you not only depart with a satisfied palate but also with newfound knowledge, and a deeper connection to the rich cultural heritage of Puerto Rico. The tour provides a perfect blend of education, entertainment, and gastronomic pleasure that leaves you wanting more of the flavours and delights of this captivating island.

Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico’s interior mountain region, which runs from east to west through fifteen municipalities, provides a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature. The Cordillera Central Mountain range is home to the five major mountains of Puerto Rico, including Cerro de Punta, Monte Jayuya, Cerro Rosa, Cerro Maravilla, and Los Tres Picachos.

I highly recommend the M Eco Tour Experience at Finca Gaia. You’ll be able to take a hike through and explore one of the many diverse ecosystems of Puerto Rico, with everything from mangroves to tropical forests. You’ll marvel at the island’s abundant flora and fauna in this lush ecosystem. The tour’s knowledgeable guide provides valuable insights into the region’s ecological importance and the many medicinal plants that thrive in this environment.

There is nothing quite like the vibrant nightlife in San Juan. On a Saturday night, the city came alive with music, dance, and celebration. Salsa rhythms spill onto the streets, drawing locals and visitors alike to lively bars and clubs. The air is filled with infectious energy as people dance the night away.

Celeste is a snazzy, classy dinner club called in the heart of San Juan. This restaurant highlights the island’s culinary prowess with its fusion of traditional and contemporary flavours. From fresh seafood to succulent meats, each dish was a work of art, accompanied by carefully curated wines and impeccable service. The exquisite ambiance and gastronomic delights make Celeste a culinary gem and one of the best restaurants in Puerto Rico.

In Puerto Rico, the combination of rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality was an unforgettable experience. From the luxurious resorts to the adventurous tours and the vibrant culture, Puerto Rico welcomes visitors with open arms. I can’t wait to go back.
