Whenever I visit a new city, one of my top priorities is to explore the culinary scene. Each restaurant provides a gateway into the culture and creates a unique experience to reminisce upon. Calgary, in particular, is one of my favourite food cities. Every block is brimming with diverse restaurants and vibrant flavours from various cuisines. Choosing where to go is always a challenge — but here is my best attempt at my top four favourite dinner spots I stop by every time I’m in Calgary.
1. Barbarella

Located right in the heart of downtown, Barbarella is one of the many delicious Calgary chains owned by Concorde Group. A trip to Barbarella is not complete without ordering a drink (shoutout to the Concorde Group’s bar, Major Tom, which has some of the best cocktails in Calgary). Thus began the evening with the difficult decision of choosing the right cocktail- but I did not regret ordering the English Garden. Its refreshing sweet flavour with a side of cucumber was perfect for a summer day. As per the waitress’s recommendation, I ordered the penne pasta with a side of breaded chicken, and it did not disappoint. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the crunch and flavour of the chicken was the ideal addition. Barbarella’s tomato pizza proves that sometimes a balance of simple flavours is the best way to present a dish. The chewy and fluffy crust with the perfect cheese-to-tomato sauce ratio had me immediately craving more.
2. Commery Block

Commery Block is a West-Tennessee style barbecue chain with locations scattered across Calgary (Hayden Block and South Block). They are known for their 10-14 hour smoked meats and overwhelming array of whiskey options. Their meats are discounted at 50% off after 10 p.m., which makes it the first place I stop when I land in Calgary after a late-night flight. Commery Block also has a delicious array of side dishes from Chipotle Empanadas to Smoked Pork Belly — although I always opt for the Bacon Mac & Cheese. However, if you prefer an early bedtime, don’t worry, Commery Block also has a delicious brunch menu. Some of the highlights are Pulled Pork Breakfast Tacos and the Hot Link Breakfast Sandwich. Every location has an excellent ambience with simple decor, lights and sometimes even live music.
3. Korilla Korean Barbecue

Korilla Korean Barbecue has everything customers want out of a Korean restaurant. To begin with, the menu has a variety of different meats to choose from and shareable options- all of which are perfect for larger groups. There are also a variety of drinks to choose from including classic Korean beers and wines and fun cocktails like the Somsatang which comes with cotton candy. During summer months, there is also a roof top for customers to enjoy the fresh air and views of the city. However, the fun doesn’t end with just the free refillable side dishes and vanilla ice cream. There is also a large karaoke lounge complete with food and drinks menus for those who are experiencing withdrawal from their meal.
4. Native Tongues

Native Tongues is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Calgary- and any dish ordered will prove this fact. The appetizers are a delectable savoury experience, from classics like chips and guacamole to chips with five different salsas. However, their tacos are certainly the star of the show. Favourites included Birria (be sure to ask for a side of the consomé), Pollo Asado and Pork Belly. Each dish was perfectly paired with a margarita (the Hibiscus Mazcalgarita was my drink of choice). We couldn’t help but end the night without looking at the dessert menu. We (thankfully) gave into temptation and ordered the donas. It was the perfect end to the evening with its not-too-sweet dough and delicious glaze.
